Reading up on the gadgets that you’re interested in is always a good idea. There are plenty of product reviews for you to consider in most cases. The mistake that a lot of people make is that they only go to the site where the product is sold to read reviews. That’s fine, as far as it goes, but the site that’s trying to sell a product isn’t going to post negative reviews. It’s much better to read reviews on other sites, where people can be as unbiased as they want to be and say what’s really in their hearts and minds about a particular product. When they do that, they can help people like you get great products that they’ll really like.

Even when you find reviews on other sites, read them carefully. It’s not uncommon for a company to pay people to post reviews. They give a person a few dollars, and the person writes about how great the company’s product is. You might be reading a review like that, so you don’t want to assume that every review is accurate. Look for patterns, in that it’s very important to see if there’s one problem that a lot of people keep mentioning, or if there are issues that people seem to have with a particular feature of the product.

If only one person doesn’t seem to like something, that’s usually not a big deal. If you get a large number of reviews with people complaining about a certain problem, that might be more significant. Keep in mind that there will always be unhappy people, no matter how great the product is, so it’s important to keep an open mind when you’re reading about what people think of the latest gadgets. That way you can use good information from others to really make your own decisions.

Have you ever wanted to pick up that new movie that just came out on DVD only to find that when you get to the video rental store, they are all out? You walk up to the touch screen, make a selection, pay with a credit or debit card and out pops the movie. Prices usually range from $1 to $1.50 and you have one day and one night to view it. If you do forget to bring it back, it just costs $1 (or $1.50) for each night that you go over. Compared to a new release movie rental at an actual movie rental store, you are saving big time.

All kiosks are linked to the companies online website. If you want to make sure that a certain movie is available, go to the website, check what is in the kiosk closest to you and see if there is anything you want. If so, go ahead and reserve it be entering your credit/debit card information online and head over to pick it up. Use the same card to pay. If you can’t find it at your kiosk, check another one until you find what you are looking for.

Free codes come out all of the time for these machines. A code gives you one free rental provided that you return the movie the next evening. One of the best ways to get a code is signing up with each of the websites (Redbox and Blockbuster) and providing your email address.

In the beginning, the only way to see a movie was in a movie theater. You went with friends, saw the picture and maybe discussed a little about what happened. Then, moviegoers were able to bring some of the magic home with VCRs and DVD players. If you didn’t own the movie, you could just head over to the video store and rent the selection you were looking for, returning it a few days later. Now a more convenient options has arrived.

Today computers and gaming systems can be found in just about every home. Using these resources, you can scroll through a collection of movies, choose something interesting, and watch it right away. There is no downloading, so you don’t have to wait a lot of time and it isn’t stored on the devices, so there isn’t a concern about taking up too much space. Because everyone has different computers or gaming devices, there are several different consoles and brands that will work.

And it isn’t just movies anymore. Now complete television series are some of the options. Frustrated that everyone at work seems to have their own language because they all watch the same television show? Watch entire seasons of hit shows on the comfort of your couch, without ever needing to leave home. Watch several episodes in a row and in no time, you too will be able to participate in the water cooler conversation.

The cost for these types of services are minimal considering the amount of viewing options that you have. Most new releases are not available in this format and will still need to rented on DVD or Blu-ray, however most of these services include some type of mailing option in the package. Going Blu-Ray?

It is possible that only a few years ago everyone was discussing the DVD player and whether or not it would take the place of the VCR. Much like the change from tapes to CDs, technology is continuing on and we find ourselves once again having a similar discussion. Is is time to convert to Blu-ray? There are people on both sides of the argument with valid points, however, it would seem that times, they are a changing.

Many retailers are looking to make the decision easier for consumers. Movies are coming out in combination packs. These packs include a DVD, a Blu-ray disc and sometimes even have a digital version that can easily be placed on the computer or iPod. If you have a Blu-ray player but aren’t ready to convert all of your movies, you can pick up the combination pack and have the best of both worlds. Take note, this combination pack is going to cost more than buying them alone. However, it is cheaper than buying each one separately.

In some ways, this choice is actually a score in the corner of the Blu-Ray. After watching a movie on DVD and then seeing the same thing through Blu-ray, there is a noticeable difference. More and more people are going to be handing over the DVDs to their parents and moving into the realm of new technology. Much like the DVD player when it first came out, the prices for Blu-ray players were a little steep, but now that is has become more common place, the prices are dropping and households are opting to switch over.

So if you haven’t already purchased one of the new players, it might be time to take the plunge. If you are still on the fence, head over to a friend’s house, but not before watching a movie on your DVD player. Then, ask them to open your eyes to the Blu-ray technology.

The Backseat Driver Moves to the Front

You may have been privileged enough to drive around in the car with some that insisted on telling you which route is the fastest, which street you should turn on and even remind you that you have arrived at your destination. Now, you can be in the car, completely alone, and still hear the voice of that backseat driver thanks to GPS programs through your phone and vehicle.

A map application can take you from your current location to any destination that you are headed towards, whether it be down the street or across the country. Get direction for driving your own vehicle, riding the bus, riding a bike or walking. If there is a place you need to go, the phone will be able to get you there.

On a positive note, routes are frequently updates, so the chances of getting lost are less than when you ask a friend to tell you where to go. In addition, the phone will give you an approximate number of miles that you will travel as well as an estimated time of arrival. This takes into consideration the traffic that you may run into.

On the downside, if there is no phone service, there is no GPS. It may not be able to located you or be able to show you a map of where you are headed. This can be especially frustrating because most of the time being in the middle of nowhere is an ideal time to have someone or something to provide you with directions back to the rest of civilization.

The convenience is immeasurable as a map is just a button or touch screen away. While it may at times seem like you still have a backseat driver traveling with you, at least this one comes with a mute button.

There is Nowhere To Hide

Ever tried to take a vacation and get away from the hustle and bustle of work and all that it entails? Ever been relaxing and enjoying time off only to hear the cell phone ring or the dreaded ding to indicate that you have a new email? Today, there it is nearly impossible to cut yourself off completely from others. While this can be a source of stress for some, there are benefits to being able to receive information no matter where you are located.

In case of an emergency, you get instant access to those around you that you care about. If something happens to you, to them, or even some type of tragedy somewhere in your local area, you can make a call or send a text and find out just where they are and where you can meet up. In fact, even social groups online can provide a platform to let the people around you know that you need something or are going through a difficult time.

You make a huge mistake at work. The presentation is in an hour and you need to have the whole thing corrected by then. Because you were able to email a copy to a few associates and your boss to look over and proofread, you can find out right away what need to be fixed and have the chance to make changes before anyone else sees the problem. Documents switch hands at an incredible rate through email.

So the next time the phone rings or you hear the ringtone of a text, remember that there are some benefits to being contacted by anyone at any time. If you still need a break from the communication, you can always place your phone on vibrate and leave it in another room or turn it off completely. This will give you some downtime to just enjoy a little peace and quiet.

Kinect: a Great Idea, Realized at Last

A lot of people have heard of the new Kinect from Microsoft. And that’s great, because they have been all but bombarding everybody in the modern world with the message about the thing for several months now. If you want to get a pretty decent workout but hate to go to some gym or outside to do so, this can be a nice little compromise between a technology craving and a desire to flex a little bit. A body in motion tends to stay alive longer, as the old saying goes. But did you know that, like almost everything else in this world, the Kinect is not that new of an idea? Believe it or not, it has a lineage which goes back to when Microsoft was still growing like a weed.

Back in the early 1990s, there was a device put out by Sega for its Genesis system. Known as the Activator, it used infrared beams to track where you were moving, and put a whole new shine on fighting games. Unfortunately, it suffered from a few setbacks which the designers of that era simply could not reconcile. The world just was not ready for the movement based games that are becoming more and more common place today. However, it is definitely for the best that such an attempt was made back then.

Some people say that the average baby tries to walk (or even to get up into a crawl) hundreds of times before they finally succeed in doing so. While some scientist somewhere has probably studied infants to the point where they know exactly how many tries it takes to learn how to take those first wobbly steps, the point is that falling down is not that big of a deal. The problem happens when someone tries to do something, falls down and just assumes that it can’t be done. It’s a good thing Microsoft does not think that way, isn’t it?

Why we Love Kinetic Gaming

So many people are buying game systems like the Wii just because of the kinetic gaming aspect of it all. So many people are snapping up those Kinect peripherals like they were life rafts aboard the Titanic. If might even lead a person to wonder just why in the world people are so in love with these glorious little kinetic gaming objects, anyway. If you have ever wondered about things like that, here is the reason- we are designed for these things. Now, maybe you had the silly notion that they were designed for us and by us. If you thought that way, you were completely justified in that belief. But make no mistake about it, we were designed to do things just like what the Wiimote and Kinect have us do.

That is the beauty of technology. It basically just takes what we are already doing, and systematizes it a little bit further than where we have been in the past. At one point in the time of humanity, we used to dance, swing fists and weapons at one another, and just generally go about our violently active business without there being any sort of sociability about the whole deal. This is probably why we have such a violent past as a species- without the ability to use our naturally violent tendencies in a constructive manner, we ended up causing each other harm.

So the next time you get a chance to whip out the old guitar (which might even be the most kinetic of all the gaming devices out there, as you rigorously rock out to the best of your ability), the DDR mat or even one of the more modern types of gaming devices, consider yourself fortunate. You are not in any particular danger, and you even have the potential to exercise your body without harming anybody else. If you don’t harm anybody else, their family won’t get revenge on you later.
