The Motorola Xoom (pronounced “zoom”) is a web tablet that will operate on Verizon Wireless’ network and become available as a 3G model during the first few months of 2011. Upgrades to 4G LTE will be available shortly thereafter.

The Xoom, competing against Apple’s iPad, will become the first web tablet device to operate using Google’s Android operating system, Honeycomb. Honeycomb enables multitasking and is designed specifically for tablets.

The Xoom is equipped with a dual-core processor. Each processor runs at 1 GHz. Its 10.1 inch display (iPad has 9.7 inches) has 1,280×800 resolution (iPad has 1,024×768), with 16:10 aspect ratio. The tablet has dual cameras. The front-facing 2-mg pix camera allows video chats via Wi-Fi or 3G/4G LTE. It also enables HDMI output for displaying content on larger HD monitors. The rear-facing 5MP camera captures 720p video in HD, and features a 10-inch viewfinder and flash.

The Xoom supports Google Maps 5.0 with 3D buildings. Xoom web tablet enables tab-based browsing, access to over 3 million Google e-book and thousands of Android apps, and movies. The Google apps and widgets are designed specifically for tablets and tablet technology. Using Adobe Flash Player, users can play HD video and other web content. Motorola indicates a Wi-Fi-only version is not planned. There is no internal GPS.

Xoom accessories include a leather case that also serves as a stand, a standard dock for charging and display, and a 3-USB port HD docking station with built-in speakers.

The Xoom offers more features and functionality than the iPad. The Xoom’s dual camera system, larger display screen, higher screen resolution, and Adobe Flash compatibility are unmatched by iPad. Xoom uses Verizon instead of AT & T for its network.

Critics suggest the Xoom should not require a data carrier plan and should use WiFi or tethering like a netbook. Other Android-based tablets from T-Mobile and LG Mobile Phones are in development that will run Honeycomb on T-Mobile’s HSPDA+ 4G network.

A lot of people have heard of the new Kinect from Microsoft. And that’s great, because they have been all but bombarding everybody in the modern world with the message about the thing for several months now. A body in motion tends to stay alive longer, as the old saying goes. But did you know that, like almost everything else in this world, the Kinect is not that new of an idea? Believe it or not, it has a lineage which goes back to when Microsoft was still growing like a weed.

Back in the early 1990s, there was a device put out by Sega for its Genesis system. Known as the Activator, it used infrared beams to track where you were moving, and put a whole new shine on fighting games. Unfortunately, it suffered from a few setbacks which the designers of that era simply could not reconcile. The world just was not ready for the movement based games that are becoming more and more common place today. However, it is definitely for the best that such an attempt was made back then.

Some people say that the average baby tries to walk (or even to get up into a crawl) hundreds of times before they finally succeed in doing so. While some scientist somewhere has probably studied infants to the point where they know exactly how many tries it takes to learn how to take those first wobbly steps, the point is that falling down is not that big of a deal. The problem happens when someone tries to do something, falls down and just assumes that it can’t be done. It’s a good thing Microsoft does not think that way, isn’t it?

That is the beauty of technology. It basically just takes what we are already doing, and systematizes it a little bit further than where we have been in the past. At one point in the time of humanity, we used to dance, swing fists and weapons at one another, and just generally go about our violently active business without there being any sort of sociability about the whole deal. This is probably why we have such a violent past as a species- without the ability to use our naturally violent tendencies in a constructive manner, we ended up causing each other harm.

So the next time you get a chance to whip out the old guitar (which might even be the most kinetic of all the gaming devices out there, as you rigorously rock out to the best of your ability), the DDR mat or even one of the more modern types of gaming devices, consider yourself fortunate. You are not in any particular danger, and you even have the potential to exercise your body without harming anybody else. If you don’t harm anybody else, their family won’t get revenge on you later.

And unless you are a truly strong person, you will most likely surrender to this sentimentality. And if you have quarters on you, they will enter the machine. Its flash and pumping speakers are just too much for most people to ignore, especially if they have so much as a fleeting, glancing memory of the fun people used to have on those very machines. There is just something wildly addictive about prancing around to the beat of a bubble gum dance song that will probably never even be well known in the United States.

So, ten years later, has the world really changed all that much? Are we in a different place, that we now hate to do physically active things in our video games? Of course not. The same adrenaline courses through our veins today that always has, and will probably always do so to some extent. So if ever you find yourself walking by one of the old arcades, all weird smelling and most likely covered with corn syrup from a million spilled sodas that nobody cared to clean up, remember where you came from. And heaven help any quarters you’ve got.

Microsoft has a way of bending the world to suit its own needs. In much the same way that oil companies have conditioned us all to use gasoline on a daily basis, Microsoft has gotten more than 90 percent of the electronics using population to see Windows as just about the only option going on. However, in the case of smart phones, Windows has been lagging behind for a couple of years now. In some ways, the phones they have attached themselves to still feel a little on the “retro” side of things. But at the same time, there is still the fact that Microsoft remains a fairly hungry company, and is going to use every option at its disposal in order to have its way with the world.

One way that Microsoft is fighting to take some market share in the smart phone arena is with Windows Phone 7. The name is a little less than creative, but at least it’s descriptive. You have Windows (which is becoming so “duh level” easy that Forrest Gump could use it without incident), and you have a phone- that seems to be a simple enough pairing. But the thing about Windows Phone that is making it seem like it belongs on the same planet as the iPhone 4 (which some people suggest actually has a halo surrounding it) is the hub system.

Using a series of six “hubs,” or different very general themes, Windows Phone allows you to keep everything simply organized, without having to delve into some kind of complicated software programs. The rule with smart phones would seem to be that easy things, glitzy things and fun things rule the day, and the hub system makes accessing any glitzy and fun things your smart phone might have on it a whole lot easier to do. And while the phones that Windows is on might not be all that great, this is a step toward better.

But what about video games and TV? Did you know that there has actually been clinical research which suggests that playing video games actually helps people to lift their moods? Some researchers (as well as gamers) have supposed that playing a game, with its various accomplishments and rewards, helps a person who does not feel as if their life is in order or under their control to get a sense that maybe it is. If this were more applicable to every day life, it could have great potential benefits to our society.

Imagine a world in which people could game their way into being better at whatever they lacked skill at. While it would be a little weird at first to play “Accounting Hero,” imagine how greatly it would benefit us all during (and in that scary lull period immediately before) tax season every year. Of course, it might take a little bit of work away from CPAs, but the likelihood is that they will still have plenty to do no matter what sorts of games we play. They’re pretty resourceful.

We all have self destructive tendencies in this life. We all do things that we know that we “shouldn’t,” such as staying up late and not sleeping much, or eating foods with way more calories and way less nutrients than our bodies need to be taking in. However, there are instances in which we try to filter out things which we intentionally choose to bring into our homes (such as pets, or the smoking of cigarettes) using these devices, as if that isn’t just masking the harm we are causing ourselves. This is a little bit different than some of our self destructive activities.

For instance, running a few extra laps around the track as a means of burning off the donuts you ate for breakfast kind of makes sense to do. However, why would you smoke, which intentionally fills your lungs with toxins, and then try to filter the air around you? Do non-smokers actually live successfully with smokers in some part of the world? Or is this nothing more than a technique used to mollify one’s sense of right and wrong- “I shouldn’t be smoking, but it feels so good. I’ll just use this filter.” Fail.

How long ago was it that, with a few exceptions, every game was played with nothing more than your thumbs (and in the case of shoulder buttons, your first fingers)? It really wasn’t that long at all. But nowadays, it seems as though pretty much every game out there requires you to have some sort of peripheral that you have to step into, strap on or grasp as if it were a stick and this were Kendo practice. While there are all sorts of possibilities for all of these different types of controllers, one does wonder if the game pad will one day be extinct.

After all, who would want to mess with a dinky little game pad, when they can dance around like Michael Jackson, or fight Muhammad Ali in his prime without having to taste canvas? These are the kinds of experiences that people simply can not have with one of those old game pads- flexing your thumbs may be fun, but throwing a left hook that puts a legend on the ground is priceless (except if you’re talking about the retail price). Now might be a good time to buy your last game pad.

It is always nice to hang out and watch a little bit of TV, just to unwind. And sometimes a movie can really get you feeling the way you want to feel. But who says that you have to go home, in order to enjoy a little bit of mindless, emotionally stimulating entertainment? In this day and age, you can just whip out your smart phone, and let the good times roll wherever you happen to be. This is probably the best point in history for being stuck in an elevator, just for that.

But on the other hand, sometimes there is just nothing worth watching on TV. And unless you love watching new movies all the time, the same old flicks do tend to get a little bit boring after awhile. So when those things happen, games become the best kind of portable entertainment. For one thing, there are tons and tons of games, many of which are completely free. And for another, even the quickest game takes longer to beat than the longest movie takes to watch… unless you use exploits, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of playing games.

The trouble with games like Farmville is that, though they are harmless in and of themselves (they don’t cost anything, and no one has ever been known to have died as a result of too much online farming), they can be a significant distraction from living a real life. Just like everything else online, people receive chemical rewards that were initially designed to reward completely different behaviors than we currently use in these types of contexts, which can lead to a highly falsified sense of having achieved something in this virtual world. This is most definitely not a good thing.

However, should there really be an FA (Farmville Anonymous) organization, with a purpose along the lines of helping people to grow real crops, and raise real animals… and talk to their friends in person? Well, that last part may just be going a little too crazy. It is best to start with baby steps, and slowly nudge one’s way from one extreme toward its opposite end. Avoiding relapses is the key, followed of course by living a more constructive life. But then again, there sure are a lot of Facebook games- how could anybody escape from all of them?

People buy smart phones so that they can use all sorts of neat features, like the GPS. Now, it does not really matter that most people only have five or six main places they go to at any point in their lives, or even that a lot of people rarely leave the city they were born in. People still like knowing that they are at such-and-such degrees west by so-and-so degrees north… whoops, there’s another minute! But while the little “toys” in cell phones are fun, the best part is being able to watch movies and TV from anywhere.

Consider what watching TV on the go used to entail. There was a point in the very recent past when you could not watching anything but the “on the air” channels without being tethered to either a cable or a huge, bulky satellite dish. So unless you were in an RV, taking it with you was about as practical as lugging around a hot tub. The way things are nowadays, whipping out your phone to check out the latest episode of your favorite shows is as easy as checking out your latest text messages.

For one thing, how much of our world is ever going to use smart phones before they reach a point of “obsolescence?” Many people in this world are just barely able to find enough food to keep themselves alive. For people like this, being able to schedule their days using a sophisticated piece of technology would be about as useful as having a gun is to a total pacifist. It might be nice to have, but the functional utility of it (beyond perhaps being able to sell it) would be fairly minimal to someone in that kind of situation.

If much of the world is not even to the point where they can indulge themselves in luxuries such as smart phones, how easily could they be made obsolete? And for that matter, what sort of technology could possibly evolve beyond a tiny, customizable device whose very design is to be malleable through the introduction of new, feature expanding applications? It would take a very serious effort to go too much further than what we have today- adding features here and there, and of course creating new apps would be nice. But the concept of the smart phone may be here to stay.

It has been suggested that there is something about being able to record the contents of one’s mind which saps a person’s memory retention. Whether this is psychosomatic or whether it has a genuine physical element to it is up to researchers to ultimately decide. But what that means for most of us is that our dependence on technology could actually be hurting our minds. COnsider the effect that are experienced when a person goes from having their to do list in their minds (or on a nice, old fashioned piece of paper) to storing their entire life inside their smart phone.

There are actually a reasonable number of individuals who could not function without the planning features which are present in their smart phones. While these individuals would seem not to be the majority as of yet, their presence is unnerving. After all, what happens when technology fails us, and we have to go back to resorting to the means our ancestors had to apply? In times of great need, we often have to do things we have never done before, with a steep learning curve. What happens to our society if our ability to organize has been lost to the phones?

Think about how most video games are set up. First, they ease you into a situation which could be considered mildly challenging. Then, as you progress further and further into the game, you find more and more challenges to test your growing skills. Many people just play until it gets difficult, and then they pop in something easier- since it’s only a game, there is no penalty for never finishing it, and the reward for playing for hours on end just to hit the limits of your skills is needless, fruitless frustration. So why knock yourself out?

A video game allows the person who plays it to feel good right now, as opposed to the delayed gratification that we all experience in our real lives. Even if you work a job where they pay you every week, you generally have to wait awhile to get that wonderful paycheck (even if it isn’t all that wonderful at all). But when you play a video game, you don’t have to wait at all to see your character kicking butt, taking names and getting the girl. As soon as you finish a level, you get rewarded- the ultimate in immediate gratification.

Meanwhile, back in the world where we have taken our anti-psychotic meds, phones are smart for reasons which can hardly be described as nefarious in nature. For one thing, the phones which we call smart really aren’t. They have fast processors, it’s true. And they have lots of storage space (often more than a high end desktop computer from only ten years ago would have had). These could both theoretically be considered to be “smart” characteristics, if they (like the scarecrow) only had a brain. This goes into consciousness theory, which we don’t need to delve into here.

But suffice it to say, a phone that does not realize how much it rules your very life can never truly be called smart. We call these devices “smart phones” because they let us act as if we were smarter than we know we really are. Herein lies their advantage over those dumb old phones we used to carry. There is pretty much no excuse to ever miss or forget about a special occasion. And we can now communicate better than any prior generation has been able to before us. What if Albert Einstein had had access to a smart phone?

That’s fine. It isn’t really that important what the original designer liked or not. The big deal is, will Wii Fit help the average person who uses it to actually become more healthy? We have a society right now who are in dire need of exercise, and apparently are also in need of a little bit of nudging in the direction of doing, instead of merely reading more and more about concepts which they will never apply. If you are sitting here reading this, remember that you need to go take breaks every so often, just to get your blood pumping a little bit faster.

The answer to the question which titles this article is going to have to remain in the realm of “maybe,” if for no other reason than that no one can accurately and completely predict the future. While there might be some extremely wealthy person out there who can, most of us are just guessing our way through things. But like everything else in life, Wii Fit depends on people actually using it, in order to be effective. It’s great, if you actually use it.

As you are no doubt aware, smart phones have taken the world by storm. When a technology has become to pervasive that even poor people who require government assistance to survive have them fairly routinely, it is no longer a status symbol in the slightest to possess whatever it is. So when one more app showed up for a few of the top smart phones- a guitar hero incarnation or clone- and allowed people to strum along to a beat that they could download from wherever, the smart money had already bet that something of that nature would happen at some point in time.

But what about playing a guitar game on a smart phone? Everybody knows that we hold a phone far differently than we hold a guitar. It almost sounds like a whole new version of carpal tunnel syndrome, to be holding a phone around your midsection (in the infamous “fig leaf” position) while you strum away at at. Could that even be comfortable, or would you have to adapt your style to the realities of a phone? Could people set their phones on tables, like very small pianos?

A little bit of Wii sanity can go a long way, you know. After all, they call it kinetic gaming, not “let’s force ourselves to go out and buy new furniture” gaming. If nothing else, the latter’s title is just too long to be practical in the least. This is why you have to offer up a little bit of discretion when you get your game on- your furniture does not deserve to be battered and abused by your mighty strokes of joy, you know. And for another thing, think about how much more work you’ll have to do, in order to afford this kind of destructive play.

So why would you want to have to blow all of the money you make, just on replacing all of the things you smash, shatter and slice through? That seems like some kind of a zen exercise in futility, doesn’t it? You need to exercise a little bit of control over your actions, even when you do all of these exercise related movements. After all, being able to control ourselves is what separates humanity from most of the other kinds of animals, right?

Have you ever noticed how easily accessible the Wiimote and the Kinect are to the gaming public? It almost does not matter whether you are a die hard “gamer” who doesn’t care all that much about bathing or having a social life, or if you just happen to pick up a game in between your horseback riding lessons and your soccer game… kinetic gaming is fun. It’s even where they got the name “Kinect” in the first place. Kinetic gaming refers to the use of physical energy, which is also known as kinetic energy (if you were able to stay awake during science class). When you use kinetic energy, technically speaking, work is done. But when what you’re doing is fun, you don’t see it as work.

You see it as nothing more than a game. Kinetic gaming is the best invention related to human beings having a good time since somebody invented the processors that allowed us to move beyond Pong. No disrespect to Pong, but how great would it be to play full body Pong on the Kinect? Throwing yourself wildly around the room trying to stop the ball before it impacts your precious wall might just turn into your next obsession- there goes all of the holiday weight you were thinking that you might want to lose.

That is the best part about kinetic gaming. Your mind thinks that you are just trying to do some kind of game oriented task. But your body, on the other hand, thinks that you are still stalking wildebeests out on the savannah, just like our ancestors did. Human bodies are made to stay in motion, if we are going to accomplish anything that is worth doing. So when you use one of the modern kinetic gaming devices, you are not just embracing the modern era. You are also going old school, and showing some respect to where our species came from. Before they invented couches.

Once your game starts up, you just stand there and move in a way that basically makes sense. Kinect reads you using some kind of fancy technological voodoo, and then translates your real life movements into the same kinds of movement inputs that would normally be done from a little game pad. Only instead of just flapping your thumbs or typing, you are actually jumping, dancing, flailing your arms, and just generally acting goofy without anybody caring. It’s a neat little calorie burn, if you get really into it. And the possibilities for when people want to challenge each other to games are going to be awesome.

Just think about how life is going to be when a person on one continent can challenge someone who lives on another continent to a boxing match, a sword fight, and a race… and neither one of them has to leave their respective rooms. Well, your imagining time is up, because you can totally do that right this minute. Well, if you don’t have an Xbox 360 and a Kinect, you would technically need to go to an appropriate store or website and pick them up- but it’s worth it.
